About Richard Shafer Madison

An expert in retirement planning, Richard Shafer currently serves as the Executive Director of Well and Good, LLC, in Madison, Wisconsin. Shafer established the retirement advisory firm in 2009 to provide fiduciaries at small to mid-sized organizations with prudent retirement solutions. Businesses receive hands-on assistance from Shafer in designing every aspect of their retirement programs, including customized policy statements, investment selection, and participant education. With his extensive industry experience, Richard Shafer has been distinguished as a Fellow by the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists, Inc., earned status as a Certified Association Executive, and maintains licenses in life and health insurance. Shafer has enhanced his knowledge of the industry through courses at the Center for Creative Leadership, Babson College, and the Boston University Graduate School of Management.

Richard Shafer attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for his undergraduate studies. After earning his Bachelor of Arts, Shafer initiated his career as an Advisory Officer with the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association – College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) in New York City. He matured in his career working with senior administrators at prominent New England institutions before garnering a promotion to Second Vice President in 1993. In this position, Richard Shafer implemented a series of programs to raise awareness about the organization’s services on the West Coast.

From 1999 to 2004, Richard Shafer acted as a Regional Vice President with TIAA-CREF. During this time, he worked with western states to transition pension funds from public entities to the organization. Shafer also developed strong relationships with state boards, committees, and educational associations. Prior to establishing his own firm, Richard Shafer spent four years as the Senior Manager and Director of Retirement Plan Solutions with the CUNA Mutual Group.
